16 Jul 2007 - Statement from Treating Autism on GMC hearings
Treating Autism believes in freedom of thought and freedom of research. The way Dr Wakefield has been treated by the GMC has stifled research into underlying medical problems in autism. What is happening at the GMC hearings harms children.
We support Dr Wakefield because he listened to parents and investigated sick children instead of ignoring them. We need medical profession to help our children not ignore them but most doctors are now scared to do so.
We support freedom of thought in autism research because the sooner we can isolate the genetic and environmental factors that are capable of triggering the skyrocketing rates of autism, the sooner we can find successful treatments.
More than 1 in 100 Uk children has Autism - when will the Government and the Medical Profession begin to ask WHY?
